Exams are stressful. We know that, and no matter how many times someone tells you to “relax” it’s not as easy as it sounds.

But we hope a few of our lifestyle tips can help take a little pressure off, and make you feel more confident about your exams. Looking after yourself is just as important as learning exam material.

Before we go any further, take a deep breath in, and out. And let’s carry on.

What to look at if you’re feeling stressed

Have a look at what you’re doing day to day and make sure that:

You’re getting enough rest. This is not just sleep, this is also just a break away from the books and stepping away from a screen. After a while we stop taking in information. If you don’t take a break you’ll find that you can’t recall what you’ve read and all that time studying will be wasted.

You’re eating well. Junk food and food with low nutrition won’t help you concentrate and will leave you feeling lethargic. Boost your brain power with lots of fruit and veg and low sugar options. And have breakfast. So many of us skip breakfast but it’s a vital brain boost first thing, and you’ll find you have more energy to concentrate on your books.

You’re not drinking too much coffee or energy drinks. You may think that caffeine will help you stay awake and therefore you can study for longer, but it can lead to insomnia and anxiety. Try alternatives such as matcha tea, smoothies or probiotic drinks.

You’re getting up and about. Exercise is important during times of stress as it can boost your feel good hormones. It can also help you sleep better, and as we said before, sleep is really important in tackling stress.

You’re managing your time well. Set aside time to do things that aren’t studying. Make a timeline with goals for your study, and reward yourself with time away from your books. By managing your time better you can stop worrying about your progress, and give yourself more time to rest.

If you’re feeling stressed about your upcoming exams, talk to your tutor. They can help you as they’ve been through the exams themselves, and have first hand experience of dealing with stress.

Also make sure you’ve got the right resources to help you study and retain as much information as you can. Have a look at our pocket notes, revision cards, exam kits and mock exams - they can all help you prepare and put your mind at ease.
